Marilyn Carney Obituary

Marilyn Carney, mother, county official, and friend to many, age 94, passed away on Tuesday, February 27,2024, at Fairview Adult Foster Care in Grand Ledge, Michigan.

Born near Fremont on December 25, 1929, to Grace (Albright) and Arthur Martin Penner,

Marilyn was raised on the family farm, in Scott Township, the second daughter of the couple.  She attended Scott Center Schools, graduating in the Class of 1947.

Marilyn began her working career in the Fremont National Bank but spent the majority of her working career in various Angola City and County offices, retiring as Steuben County Clerk of Courts in 1995.

She married John P. Carney, Sr. in 1956 and that union, while not lasting, produced five children.

Marilyn was known for her love of family, cooking, the out of doors, hunting morel mushrooms and Indiana University Basketball. She was a good friend and neighbor who brought kindness to many in the work she did as a public official.  In her duties as County Clerk, she performed many marriages throughout the county.

Following her retirement, she served as a volunteer at the Cameron Cancer Center for more than 20 years.

Marilyn is survived by her son John Jr. (Ryndee) Carney, Birmingham, MI; son James (Gail) Carney, Thousand Oaks, CA; daughter Kelle (Scott) Jenkins, Lansing MI; Lauri (Jerry) Szabela, Alpharetta, GA.

She was preceded in death by a fifth child, Scott Edward Carney, in 1963 and her older sister Barbara (Penner) Rose.

She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Josh (Megan) Jenkins of Elmhurst, IL; Bridgett Carney of Burien, WA; Kevin Jenkins of San Diego, CA; Brian Szabela of Atlanta, GA; Katie Jenkins of Eagle, CO; Andrew Szabela of Atlanta, GA and Erin Carney of San Marcos, CA; and two great grandchildren, Miles and Emmett Jenkins of Elmhurst, IL.

Marilyn was a true believer in the value of education and was generous in her support of the education of her children and grandchildren.  The family was blessed and lucky for Marilyn’s time with us.  Our most sincere thanks to the many friends who have sent prayers and condolences.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 6:00 pm on Friday, March 1, 2024, at the Weicht Funeral home in Angola, Indiana.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Weicht Funeral Home, Angola, Indiana.
