Dear Emma, Joe and Lyle - I'm so sorry for your loss.. My memories of Sam were always of his gentleness and kindness and his smile. You could tell by his life that his family meant the world to him. As the days turn into weeks, into months, may your tears of sorrow be replaced with a smile as your remember what a great man he was and the gifts that he left for you. Dear Emma, Joe, Chris and Lyle - like both my sister's have said here, you all meant so very much to Sam, in each of your own special ways. I remember him as one of the most kind and most generous souls I've ever met. As Jana said, I too pray that as time passes the tears of sorrow be replaced with smiles in remembrance of him and your lives together. May God's peace be with you all. Love, Karla and Amanda

I served for 6 years in the Indiana National Guard at Angola and Sam was our Heavy Weapons Platoon Sargent. He had the rank of Sargent First Class but never threw his weight around. He was very competent and very fair in all of his dealings with the troops. He was truly a fine fellow and I was lucky to have him as my Sargent.
