Stanley P. Gilbert, 75, was called home by his Lord and Savior on Saturday, February 9, 2013. Stan was born July 27, 1937 to Donald and Lelah (Eyster) Gilbert at the Gilbert Homestead near Metz, where he was residing at the time of his death. He was a 1955 graduate of Metz High School where he participated in sports and music. He married Elizabeth Lautzenhiser on December 16, 1956 at the Metz Christian Church where he served as a teacher, elder and trustee. Stan was the owner and operator of the family farm and also worked as a journeyman carpenter. He graduated with high honors from Ivy Tech in 1993, and retired from TransGuard in 2000. Stan always lived life to the fullest. He loved to travel and made friends wherever he went. He had a big heart, which was evident in his love for children and young people. His home was a favorite gathering place for his grandchildren and their friends. He was also known for having a great sense of humor. He was a charter member of the Metz Volunteer Fire Department where he had served as Fire Chief and was one of the department's first EMTs. He was active in the National Farmers' Organization, and served on several boards including Indiana Foster Care and Adoption, Steuben County REMC, Metz Christian Church and Lake James Christian Assembly. He also advocated for children as a CASA volunteer, and for the unborn through Northeastern Indiana Right to Life. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth, of Metz, one son, Scott (Shalometh) Gilbert of Englewood, CO, eight daughters, including Laurie Smith of Grand Ledge, MI, Julie (Tom) Friend of Pleasant Lake, IN, Pam (Gary) Greenwood of Butler, IN, Tam (Rick) Myers of Hamilton, IN, Becky Gilbert of Hamilton, IN, Lisa (Jim) Longino of Fayetteville, AR, Connie (Danny) Devers of Muncie, IN and Bobbianne (Donnie) Andersen of Dayton, TN. Stanley was also "Dad" to Frank (Amanda) Stetler of Angola, IN, Denice (Chuck) Mason of Cozad, NE, Nancy Wade of Willits, CA and Roy Wade of Wenatchee, WA. His family also includes twenty-four grandchildren, five step-grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a sister, Elaine (John) Graham of Fremont, IN and a sister-in-law Shirley (Ned) Somerlott of Metz, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Wendell Gilbert, one son-in-law, Steve Brown, a foster son, Danny Wade and a grandson, Owen Wynne-Wade. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 at the Weicht Funeral Home from 2PM-8PM, with a walk-through by the Steuben County Volunteer Firemen at 6:00 PM. The funeral service will be held at the Metz Christian Church on Thursday, February 14, 2013 at 11:00 AM with one hour of visitation prior to the service. Michael Hesterman, Stan's pastor and friend, will be officiating. Burial will follow at the Metz Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Mr. Gilbert's sons, sons-in-law and grandsons. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Lake James Christian Assembly.
