Ana Maria Altieri (née Gioia) of Angola, Indiana, passed away peacefully on November 8th at the age of 81. Ana Maria, born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, to Rene and Angela Gioia was a beloved wife, mother, and grandmother.
Ana Maria, a proud matriarch, was devoted to her family. Immigrating to the United States in the early 70’s with her husband, Francisco, Ana Maria built a life for her two sons through hard work and love. Ana Maria had a fulfilling career working for United Airlines, as well as being a self-employed entrepreneur. Never forgetting her roots, Ana Maria was an early member of the historic Friends of Brazil Club in the San Francisco Bay Area in the 80s.
A woman of the world, Ana Maria lived in Sao Paulo during her early years, but also called Chicago, San Francisco, Petaluma, and Oakland home. She settled in Indiana in 2017 after traveling extensively throughout her life.
To her granddaughters, Ana Maria, affectionately known as vovó, will be remembered for the family recipes and love she taught them from a young age. To her sons, Ana Maria was a confidante and protector and will be remembered for her devotion and selflessness. Ana Maria and Francisco, who passed away in 2015, were together for more than 50 years.
Ana Maria is survived by her son, Marcelo, granddaughters, Alyssa and Mia, daughters-in-law, Tonya and Michele, and family in California and Texas. Ana Maria will be reunited with her husband, Francisco, and son, Alexander, who preceded her in death.
