David Gene Headley

ANGOLA — David Gene Headley, 65, of Fremont, Indiana, passed away suddenly on Thursday, Aug. 15, 2024, at his home.

David was born on Oct. 21, 1958, in Angola, Indiana, to Maurice Gene “Doc” and Phyllis Ann (Allomong) Headley.

He graduated from Angola High School in 1977, and received his Diesel Mechanic certification from Lincoln Technical Institute in Indianapolis, Indiana.

David married Jean Holman on Aug. 25, 1984.

He worked for the Steuben County Highway Department in Angola, Indiana, retiring on April 15, 2024, after 20 years. He also worked as a farm machinery/tractor mechanic for Reitzel’s, Oliver Sales and Larry’s Repair. David enjoyed working on his family farm, restoring and repairing antique tractors and riding around in the combine with his son-in-law.

David liked all things mechanical, such as trains, airplanes, motor vehicles and his favorite tractors, especially Oliver. He enjoyed going to tractor shows and was a member of The Oliver Gang, Steuben County Antique Power Association and several other Tractor Clubs including the National Threshers Association.

David always enjoyed bringing the family’s band organ to town for the arrival of Santa and driving their fire truck with the calliope in the Fourth of July parade. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Tava and Sawyer, and showing them off to anyone who would listen.

Surviving are his wife, Jean Headley, of Fremont, Indiana; daughter, Alison (Josh) Leffers, of Edon, Ohio; and two grandchildren, Tava Leffers and Sawyer David Leffers. Also surviving are his siblings, Susan (Kevin) O’Brien, of Lakemoor, Illinois, Sara (Brent) Thrasher, of Avon, Indiana, and Elizabeth Henry, of Evansville, Indiana; and several aunts, nephews, nieces, and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Visitation will be from 4-7 PM, Thursday, August 22, 2024, at Weicht Funeral Home in Angola, Indiana.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m., on Friday, Aug. 23, 2024, at Angola United Methodist Church, Angola, Indiana, with the Rev. Tim Terrell officiating.

Committal service and burial will be 2:00 PM, August 23, 2024, at Powers Cemetery, Steuben County, Indiana.

Memorial donations may be made for the Educational Fund of Tava and Sawyer David Leffers. Checks may be made out to Alison Leffers.
