Denice Mayree Mason

Denice Mayree Mason, “Aunt Nee Nee”, age 48, formerly of Angola, Indiana, passed away surrounded by her loved ones on April 23 at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  She was born in Adrian, Michigan to Noel and Wealtha Sweet.  Denice was a 1993 graduate of Leo High School.  She married Charles “Chuck” Mason on June 17, 2002 in Cozad, Nebraska. Denice and Chuck loved watching football and both cheered for the Cornhuskers unless they were playing Michigan (Denice’s Favorite), then all bets were off.  They also loved playing Keno and cards with their friends. 

When Chuck passed, about 4 years ago, Denice returned home to be close to family, in Indiana, where she lived at Auburn Village Nursing Home.  While living there she was known as “Little D” by her close friends.  The staff and residents loved Denice and her ornery personality.  Her favorite activity was playing bingo, where she was frequently the winner.

In addition to her husband, Denice was preceded in death by her dad, Stanley Gilbert of Angola, of whom she often reminded us that she was his “favorite.” Survivors include her mom, Elizabeth Gilbert of Angola; sisters, Bobbianne Anderson and Connie Devers-White; niece and nephews, Courtney, Christian, Cameron, and Eli; great-nephews, Caydin, Roman, and Stanton; and cousins Ed and Gary Griffiths. She is also survived and loved by her Gilbert Family.

A private Celebration of life service was held at the Gilbert home on Wednesday, April 26th, where Denice loved to celebrate the holidays. Family members read scripture, poems, shared many memories, and sang hymns and even a favorite of hers, Rocky Top. As a tribute to Denice, we played quarter bingo, “Whoo Hoo,” drank lots of pop, and had salty snacks and sweet treats, all of which she enjoyed.
