ANGOLA — Dean “Doc” Mattox, M.D., 76, of Angola, Indiana, died Friday, October 10, 2014, in Angola.
He was born April 11, 1938, to the late Malcolm and Emma (Brooks) Mattox in Columbus, Indiana.
Dean graduated with an undergraduate degree in psychology and went on to earn his medical degree from Indiana University School of Medicine.
After a residency, Dean practiced medicine for nearly 50 years in cities including, Howe, LaGrange, Kendallville, Angola in Indiana and Sturgis, Michigan. Forty-two of those years were spent providing family medicine and anesthesiology in Angola.
Dean is most remembered as an avid golfer, pilot, doctor, loving husband and father and a proud grandfather.
Throughout his career and life he was a member of Angola United Methodist Church, Steuben County Rotary, American Medical Association, American Academy of Family Physicians, and the Indiana State Medical Association. He maintained his board certification in family medicine during his entire medical career. After retirement he became the first ever Emeritus Medical Staff member in the history of Cameron Memorial Hospital.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Cheri (Rupert) Mattox; his children, Dr. Dean (Susan) Mattox of Angola, Doug Mattox of Upton, Massachusetts, Dr. Joe (Dawn) Mattox of Fort Wayne, Jeff (Jen) Kennedy of Fort Wayne, and Amy Archbold of Fort Wayne; and 11 grandchildren who absolutely adored their grandfather, Megan, Michael, Colton, Jake, Ella, Brayden, Teagan, Paige, Taylor, Eli and Emmy.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Malcolm, Ray, Paul, Jon Mattox; and his sister, Jeanne Mattox.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, October 13, 2014, at the Angola United Methodist Church, with visitation from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the service. Pastor Tim Terrell will be officiating.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Monday, October 13, 2014, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne, Indiana.
Visitation will also be from 1-3 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at the Weicht Funeral Home, Angola, Indiana.
Memorials in Dean’s memory may be made to the Angola United Methodist Church in Angola.
