Mack Hosack Obituary

It is with great sadness that the family of Mack Hosack announces his passing in October 2025, at the age of 76. Mack was a devoted husband, loving father and grandfather, and a kind, curious soul who lived his life with deep purpose and care.

Born and raised in Angola, Indiana, Mack grew up with a love of learning and a quiet sense of adventure that shaped his life. He earned a degree in Liberal Arts from Olivet College in Michigan and later a degree in Civil Engineering from Tri-State University. A licensed professional engineer, he was a proud member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and Tau Beta Pi fraternity. Mack was also an alumnus of the Returned Peace Corps Volunteers and International Voluntary Services (IVS), experiences that strengthened his sense of connection to the wider world.

Mack began his career as a construction engineer on the Indiana Toll Road before joining the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) as a traffic engineer. Over 25 years, he helped design and maintain the infrastructure of his home state, taking pride in the work that improved the daily lives of others. His colleagues remember him for his calm presence, thoughtful insights, and genuine kindness. Mack retired from INDOT in 2024, grateful for the friendships and memories built along the way.

In 1983, Mack married Gisela Thomas-Hosack, and together they built a family rooted in love, adventure, and understanding. They raised four children — Dominic, Nicolaus, and Kisii of the United States, and Manuel of Germany — instilling in them the same curiosity, independence, and compassion that defined their father.

Outside of work, Mack found joy in simple pleasures and the beauty of the world around him. He loved gardening, woodworking, golf, camping, and travel, and approached every project or trip with quiet enthusiasm and care. Whether sharing a meal with family or exploring a new trail, Mack made every moment meaningful.

He is survived by his wife, Gisela Thomas-Hosack; his children, Dominic, Nicolaus, and Kisii (United States) and Manuel (Germany); his grandchildren, River Hosack, Ibii Mise, and Aishat Michael; and his sister, Patricia “Pat” O’Neal of Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mack and Marie Hosack, and his daughter, Esther Thomas.

Mack will be remembered for his gentle humor, steady wisdom, and generous heart. His legacy lives on in the love he gave, the friendships he nurtured, and the many lives he quietly touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family invites donations to be made in Mack’s honor to the Southern Poverty Law Center, Doctors Without Borders, or the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) — organizations that reflect his lifelong values of justice, compassion, and humanity.

A Celebration of Life Service will be 11:00 AM, Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Angola, Indiana.
