Marilyn Bumgarner Obituary

Marilyn Rowe Bumgarner, 77, passed away at home on Monday June 3, 2024.

She was born to Alberta and Marvin Rowe in Auburn, Indiana on April 22, 1947.  Her early and returning years were at Pleasant Lake where she helped in the family business, Lake View Court, and attended Pleasant Lake Elementary and Angola High Schools (1965).  She graduated from Ball State University in 1969 and worked at Public Service Indiana Utility in Rochester, Indiana, Singer in Bloomington, Indiana, Sugar 'n Spice Preschool, Mt. Empire Community College, and she taught Redirecting Children's Behavior as a business, in Big Stone Gap, Virginia.

She was united in marriage with Gary Bumgarner on January 8, 1972, and from their union three children were born: Carey (John) Weatherspoon, Amy (Michael  Beal), and Mark (Tracy) Bumgarner, and six grandchildren: Sarah and Elayna Weatherspoon, Will and Anna Bumgarner, and Henry and Eli Beal.

Locally Marilyn attended Pleasant Lake Baptist Church and Pleasant Lake United Methodist Church. She served on the board of The Pleasant Lake Historical Society Museum. When Marilyn lived in Big Stone Gap Virginia, she attended the Presbyterian Church in Big Stone Gap, Virginia. She taught at Sugar and Spice Pre-School and in the Mountain Empire Community College Child Development Program. Teaching pre-school was especially important to her and she followed the educational progress of her students sending each of them a congratulatory card and message upon their graduation from high school. She was very involved in community organizations and activities in her many years in Big Stone Gap as well.

She loved her family and Pleasant Lake where she was able to enjoy and share with her family and others all the care and benefits of lake living. She loved the grounds and cabins her parents established and the many guests that returned to the lake every year. Teaching preschool children was especially important to her also.

Other additional family members that survive her are her sisters: Sharon (Joe) Gheraldi, Staten Island, New York, and Sandra (Dave) Brockett, Pleasant Lake, Indiana.

Preceding her in death was a sister and brother: Anita and Stephen Rowe, Grandparents: Edward and Tabitha Wise and Oscar and Gertrude Rowe of Jay and Randolph Counties, Indiana and in-laws, Helen and Bill Bumgarner, Fremont, Ohio.
