Richard L Knecht, 97, of Angola, went home to his Lord and Savior, November 26, 2025. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.
He was born on April 5, 1928, in Montpelier, Ohio, to Franklin and Geraldine (Bauer) Knecht. He described his childhood as happy with stories of surviving the depression, his skill for winning marbles, and carefree summers at Hamilton Lake (Cold Springs Resort) with his grandparents. He graduated from Montpelier High School in 1946 where he excelled in basketball, academics, and making lifetime friendships. Upon graduation he immediately enlisted in the Navy where he earned his GI bill to attend pharmacy school in Toledo, Ohio.
He married his beloved “Red”, Ina M Harrington, August 27, 1949. They moved to Angola, Indiana, lived their love story, and raised 4 daughters. She proceeded him in death in January, of 2005.
Surviving are his daughters, Gay Ann (Jim) Berlien, Fort Wayne, IN, Cathy Knecht, South Bend, IN, Rhonda (Denny) Bobay, Angola, IN and Amy Knecht (Hector Arroyo) Winter Haven., FL. He enjoyed a growing family with 6 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.
In 1960, as co-owner, Richard opened K&H Pharmacy, home of the famous “round table”. For 25 years at K&H, he practiced with compassion, professionalism, and most of all kindness. He finished his career practicing for Hostetler Pharmacy in Shipshewana until he was 80 years old.
He served his community as a City Councilman for 20 years, was a faithful member of Calvary Lutheran Church since 1956 and served on various committees. He coached little league, was a member of the Jaycees, and held a real estate license.
For enjoyment there was nothing better than Big Band music and Big Band Dancing. You could find him and “Red” gracefully foxtrotting on many a dance floor whenever the bands were playing.
He had a love for golf, sailing, and always made time to watch baseball. He was known around town for his daily 2-mile walks and zipping around in his red VW beetle.
He deeply loved his family and believed Corinthians 13:13, “And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love”.
Funeral Services will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, December 8, 2025, at Calvary Lutheran Church with Pastor Daryl Emowrey officiating.
