Thomas Cory Saylor, affectionately known as “Tom,” passed away on September 25 at 11:00 AM. He was born in Adrian, Michigan at Bixby Hospital on July 7, 1942, and lived a life marked by passion, perseverance, and profound impact.
Tom graduated from Eastern Michigan University in 1964 with a bachelor’s degree in education. He later earned a master’s degree from Ball State University and was honored with an honorary doctorate from Eastern Michigan University in recognition of his extraordinary accomplishments in coaching and teaching.
Tom became a legend in Michigan high school football, coaching 11 years and setting the national all-time win streak record of 72 consecutive victories over nine seasons. His final record at Hudson High School stood at an astonishing 94-5-1. After leaving Hudson, Tom moved his family to Angola, Indiana, where he continued his coaching career for another 30 years—building yet another legacy of excellence and mentorship.
Tom’s coaching career spanned from the mid-1960s to 2010. In 25 seasons as a head coach, he compiled a record of 172 wins, 65 losses, and one tie.
Beyond the gridiron, Tom’s entrepreneurial spirit flourished. In 1970, he founded Tom’s Donuts on Lake James, a business that grew into a beloved institution and continues to serve generations of families with warmth and tradition.
Tom was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Colleen Saylor, and his brother, Ted Saylor.
He is survived by his sister, Sue Saylor; his children Todd (Traci) Saylor, Shane (Nicole) Saylor, and Taryn (Marty) Harris; the children’s mother, Madeline Rice Saylor Smith; his grandchildren Courtnee (Casey) Rowe , Kendra (Derek) Scharite, Kara (Bryson) Richards, Mandy Saylor, Reagan Saylor, Tommy Saylor, Austin Svihlik, and Olyvia Harris; and four great-grandchildren who will carry forward his legacy of love and strength.
